There are many opportunities for students to become involved in the
legislative process. Students age 12 and older can serve as honorary
pages for a day. Pages work in a member's office for part of the day and
take a tour of the Capitol. However, the highlight of the day is working on
the House Floor. Sara frequently hosts pages, and if you are interested
you can contact her office.
There are limited long term internship opportunities at the Capitol.
However, Sara does host middle and high school students who need to
complete job shadows and short term work experiences.
The Capitol also offers tours for public, private and homeschool classes
third grade and older. Rep. Gelser's office can help you set that up as well.
Opportunities for Kids
The Oregon Legislative Assembly normally meets beginning the second Monday of January in the
odd numbered years. Sessions typically last through June. In 2008, the Oregon Legislature called
60 members of the House, and 30 members of the Senate.
During the session, committees meet and floor sessions are held regularly. Members of the public
are invited to testify to committees, to watch floor sessions, and to meet individually with members.
In the interim, Legislators work on bill development and assistant constituents and local governments with state
government issues. Legislators also return to the Capitol regularly for interim committee meetings.
